Frequently Asked Questions
Three: blind without colour, in silver and in gold. We work with hot-foil embossing, that is with heat and pressure on the hot-foil press. The name sits in the leather, not on it, and therefore cannot flake off. Silver carries well on dark brown and black, gold suits the light brown leather.
In the DEVON yes, it has its own compartment for it. The leather is deep-drawn, the AirTag sits in a recess and does not rattle along. As an alternative there is the AirTag case in leather, which holds the AirTag completely and can be hung on anything by its D-ring. An Apple AirTag is not included in either case.
It needs a hole diameter of at least 4 mm. Very small holes do not fit. Modern remote and folding car keys are usually too bulky for the flat cases. For those there is the matt black D-ring of the DEVON.
Yes. Every keychain and every key case lies in a fine lidded gift box with a silver ribbon stretched diagonally across it. We emboss the silver logo on it ourselves, with heat and pressure. There is nothing left for you to wrap.
No. The SELBY is our only keychain made of 100 % Merino wool felt, combined with a leather element. It is light, quiet and the least expensive one in the range. If you want leather, take the ELLON.
A fob (ELLON, SELBY) hangs on the key ring and the keys stay free. A case (FESTMOKER, KINGSLEY) folds around the bunch and makes it flat. An organizer (DEVON) holds the keys on a screw system, and they fold out one by one like the blades of a pocket knife.
The FESTMOKER holds up to six, the DEVON up to nine. The KINGSLEY comes in two sizes, S for five and L for ten keys. ELLON and SELBY are fobs for a few keys on the ring.
With the SELBY, the ELLON and the FESTMOKER yes, you do not have to buy anything else. The DEVON has a D-ring instead.
In daily use a dry, soft cloth is enough. After it gets wet, dab it, do not rub, and let it dry in the air at room temperature, not on a radiator. Use grease and wax sparingly: vegetable-tanned leather takes in care products greedily and darkens as it does.
From family-run tanneries in Tuscany, vegetable-tanned (Pelle Conciata Al Vegetale In Toscana). It is worked in our own workshop in Hamburg, Germany, and has been since 2011.
Leather key cases, keychains and organizers – handmade in Hamburg since 2011
Nobody really loses keys, they just keep them badly. A loose bunch scratches your phone, rattles in your pocket and presses when you sit down. A key case in leather turns it into a flat piece that you like to hold. We build seven answers to that, from vegetable-tanned leather from Tuscany and from Merino wool felt, all in our own workshop in Hamburg, Germany.
The first question is never the material, it is the design. If you carry two keys, you need a fob. If you carry seven, you need a case. And if you keep searching for your keys, you need an organizer with an AirTag compartment. So the table comes first here, and the leather after it.
Loose fob, leather key case or organizer with an AirTag compartment?
That is the real decision. All three designs hold keys together, but they solve different problems. Read the row that fits your bunch of keys.
| Design | How it works | Right for you if | Models |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fob | A piece of leather or wool felt on the key ring. The keys stay free to move. | you carry two or three keys and mainly want something that feels good in the hand and may carry a name | ELLON, SELBY |
| Case | The leather folds around the bunch or takes it in completely. The pile becomes a flat package. | the bunch rattles, scratches or presses in your trouser pocket | FESTMOKER, KINGSLEY |
| Organizer | The keys sit on a screw system and fold out one by one, like the blades of a pocket knife. Plus a compartment for the AirTag. | you have many keys, want them in order and keep searching for them | DEVON |

Leather key cases for men: KINGSLEY or FESTMOKER
Both turn the rattling pile into something flat that fits into a trouser pocket. The difference lies in the number and in the closure: the KINGSLEY holds the keys inside, the FESTMOKER holds them on the ring and folds the leather around them.
KINGSLEY, when there are many keys
The key case comes in two sizes: S for five keys, L for ten. To open it, release the press stud and fold the key you need out at the top. The keys need a hole diameter of at least 4 mm for that; very small holes do not fit. Available in light brown and dark brown, and it can be embossed with up to three characters.
FESTMOKER, when it should stay flat
Up to six keys hang on a solid ring eyelet, with the leather folded around them. On the back there is a discreet embossed logo, and it closes with quality YKK press studs. The FESTMOKER comes in three colours: light brown, dark brown and black. It is deliberately not made for modern remote and folding car keys, which are too bulky for the slim case. Those are what the DEVON and its D-ring are for.
The DEVON: a key organizer in leather with an AirTag compartment
The DEVON works like a pocket knife: the keys sit on a stainless steel screw system with an extension bar and fold out one by one instead of rattling on a ring. If the stack sits too loose or too tight, you add a spacer ring or take one away. On the matt black D-ring hangs whatever does not lie flat in the stack: the car key, for example.
The leather for the AirTag compartment is deep-drawn, which means it is shaped under pressure, rather than the AirTag simply being clamped between two layers. That is why it sits firmly and does not rattle. An Apple AirTag is not included. If you only want to wrap the AirTag itself, the AirTag case in leather at 39 € is the made-to-fit answer: reinforced inner side, YKK press stud, D-ring.
Leather key cases with engraving: personalised with a name
We make the engraving as a hot-foil embossing: heat and pressure form the name into the leather, on the hot-foil press in our workshop. Nothing is printed on, so nothing can flake off. There are three versions to choose from.
- Blind embossing – without colour. The name stands in the leather as a relief and tends to become clearer rather than fainter as the patina builds. The most restrained version.
- Silver – a light foil. It suits dark brown and black well, because the contrast carries.
- Gold – a warm foil. It suits the light brown, caramel-coloured leather particularly well.
| Model | Characters | Version |
|---|---|---|
| ELLON | up to 10 | blind, silver, gold |
| KINGSLEY | up to 3 | see the product page |
| FESTMOKER | possible | see the product page |
| DEVON | – | cannot be personalised |
| SELBY | – | cannot be personalised |
The embossing is done by hand, and that takes time. Please allow for it in the delivery time, especially in December. And take a second look at the spelling before you order: what is once in the leather stays there.
Why leather instead of plastic?
Plastic fobs break, imitation leather flakes off, cheap key cases lose their shape after a year. Vegetable-tanned leather from Tuscany does the opposite: it gains character through use, and the surface develops a patina that no other material can imitate. Buy once, keep for a long time.
There is a second, practical point. A bunch of keys is a bundle of sharp metal edges that rubs against your phone, your glasses and your pocket all day long. Leather is soft enough to absorb that and tough enough to take it for years. A case made of plastic manages one or the other, rarely both.
The leather: vegetable-tanned cowhide, just under 2 mm thick
We use full-grain real leather from family-run tanneries in Tuscany, vegetable-tanned (Pelle Conciata Al Vegetale In Toscana). The hide reaches us just under 2 mm thick and we bring it down to the thickness each part needs. The ELLON, for example, is cut from leather 2 mm thick and becomes softer over the years.
Full-grain means the surface is not sanded down to look even. Pores, fine veins and small scars stay visible, and the colour deepens over the years. A key case in leather that goes into a trouser pocket every day looks different after two years than on the first day: darker, softer, with a patina. If you are looking for a material that always looks the same, a coated leather is the better choice. We deliberately do the opposite.
The SELBY is our only keychain made of 100 % Merino wool felt, combined with a leather element. Not a synthetic needle felt, but real virgin wool. It is light, it does not rattle against other metal parts and it does not feel cold in winter. The SELBY is therefore expressly not a leather fob.
What is not leather: press studs, rings, screws
A keychain is used every day, often several times. So it is not the leather alone that decides, but also what hangs from it. We do not buy the hardware by price, but by names you can look up.
- PRYM ring-spring press stud on the ELLON. Extra strong, so the fob also holds on a belt loop and does not open at the first pull.
- YKK press studs on the FESTMOKER and on the AirTag case. Easy to open, audible to close.
- Stainless steel screws with an extension bar in the DEVON, plus white spacer rings and two black leather rings on the outside. That lets you readjust the stack instead of replacing it.
- Solid key rings with the SELBY, the ELLON and the FESTMOKER. They are included, you do not have to buy anything else. The DEVON and the AirTag case have a D-ring instead.
Gift-ready: the leather key case arrives in a box
Every keychain and every key case arrives in a fine lidded gift box with a silver ribbon stretched diagonally across it. We emboss the silver logo on it ourselves, here, with heat and pressure on the hot-foil press. There is nothing left for you to wrap, not even on 23 December.
That is why this category is our strongest gift shelf: a price between 19 and 59 €, a size that always fits, and a name in the leather on request. You will find more ideas under Gifts in leather.
How to care for your leather key case
- In daily use: wipe it with a dry, soft cloth. Usually nothing more is needed.
- After it gets wet: dab the leather, do not rub, and let it dry in the air at room temperature. Not on a radiator, not in the sun.
- Stains: do not rub hard. Moisture and grease change the colour at first, and much of it evens out over time.
- Grease and wax: use them sparingly. Vegetable-tanned leather takes in care products greedily and darkens as it does. Better a little, evenly, than a lot in one spot.
- Wool felt on the SELBY: shake it out and brush it, and take up crumbs with the upholstery nozzle of a vacuum cleaner. Do not wash it.
Part of the Pack & Smooch collection
DEVON, KINGSLEY, FESTMOKER, ELLON, SELBY and CORBY are matched to the same materials as our iPad sleeves, laptop bags and desk mats. One consistent picture, from the bag to the bunch of keys. Handmade in Hamburg since 2011.
For companies we make the same pieces in series as well, embossed with a name or a logo: Employee gifts.
From the raw hide to the last stitch
In our own workshop in Hamburg. Splitting, skiving, punching, sewing, embossing, hardware and final inspection all happen here – since 2011, with long-standing partners for single steps.
This is why we can say which layer of the hide was used, how it was tanned and where it comes from. With a bought-in finished part that would not be possible.
