Frequently Asked Questions

Because for a charging case this size there is exactly one sensible construction. We would rather build one case where the lid, the edge and the charging all work than four versions you have to choose between. The choice you actually make is the one between leather and Alcantara®.

Yes. The lid cover is attached so that the opening mechanism stays free and the hinge is not put under strain. The attachment can be released again.

An Italian microfibre material made of 68 % polyester and 32 % polyurethane, known from vehicle and furniture manufacturing. It is light, hard-wearing and feels velvety like suede, but is easier to clean. We use it for the AirPods 4.

Yes. Vegetable tanned leather darkens under light and the touch of a hand. It is most visible on light brown and least visible on black. It becomes clear after roughly two to three months of daily use.

Yes. It comes in a fine lidded box with a silver ribbon set diagonally across it. We emboss the silver mark ourselves, with heat and pressure.

For generations below the AirPods Pro 2 we currently have no fit in the range. Drop us a line telling us which AirPods you have before you order.

The AirPods Pro 3, the AirPods Pro 2 and the AirPods 4. Each generation has its own fit, because the charging cases differ in their dimensions. You choose the generation in the product view.

Yes. You can leave the charging case inside and put it on a compatible charging mat as usual. The USB-C port stays accessible as well.

Leather changes. It darkens, develops a patina and looks different after two years than it did on the first day. Alcantara® stays even, matte and quiet. If you like natural marks, take leather. If you want a consistent look, take Alcantara®.

Leather in dark brown, light brown and black for the AirPods Pro 3, and in dark brown and light brown for the Pro 2. For the AirPods 4 there is Alcantara® in light grey.

Only to a degree. Leather cushions, but it is not armour. It protects above all against scuffing, scratches and rubbing inside a bag. If you need maximum impact protection, a thick plastic shell serves you better.

Wipe leather with a dry, soft cloth and, when needed, apply a little colourless leather care product sparingly. Dab leather that has got wet, do not rub, and let it dry in the air. Clean Alcantara® carefully with a soft brush and dab small marks with a slightly damp cloth.

AirPods Cases in Leather

The AirPods charging case is the item that takes the most punishment in everyday use. It sits loose in a trouser pocket, in a backpack next to your keys, in a jacket next to loose change. After a year you can see it. A leather case takes those marks instead, and it looks better over time rather than worse.

This collection holds exactly one product: the OTLEY at €59. We are not going to pretend you have a choice between five models here. There is one fit per AirPods generation, and the decision you actually make is the one between materials. Everything on this page describes that single piece: which generation it fits, what it is made of, what it does in daily use, and when another material would be the better choice.

Leather or Alcantara: the material comparison

Because there is only one model, the real decision is not between our versions but between materials. AirPods cases are made from silicone, from hard plastic, from fabric and from leather. Each material solves a different problem, and none of them solves all of them.

Materials for AirPods cases compared: leather, Alcantara, silicone, hard plastic and fabric

The honest sentence about this: if an AirPods case mainly has to survive a fall onto concrete, leather is not the right material. But a charging case rarely falls two metres onto stone. It rubs. It grinds against zips, against keys, against the inner seam of a trouser pocket. That is exactly what leather is built for, and it is why a leather case looks like something after two years, while a silicone case looks like a spare part.

What an AirPods case has to get right

If you are looking for an AirPods Pro case in leather, you will find hundreds of offers that look almost identical from the outside. The differences sit in five places, and you notice all five only after weeks of use:

  • The lid has to open freely. If the case is built across the hinge, it pulls every time you open it. Sooner or later the lid no longer closes flush.
  • The speaker and the status light must not be covered. The charging case makes a sound when it pairs, and when you search for it. A case that muffles that sound takes away the one function you need in an emergency.
  • The port has to stay free. USB-C without taking anything off, otherwise the case ends up in a drawer within two weeks.
  • Wireless charging has to keep working. Every extra layer costs distance, and metal inside a case ends the matter completely.
  • The edge has to be closed. Open cut edges are the point where cheap leather cases give up first.

The OTLEY is built along those five points. That is not spectacular, but it is the difference between a case you still use after a year and one you take off after a month.

Which AirPods do you have?

With AirPods the generation decides, not the name on the box. The charging cases differ in width, in height and in where the speaker sits, so every fit is built separately. You choose the generation in the product view.

How to identify your generation

The AirPods Pro 3 and Pro 2 both have silicone tips on the earbuds, the AirPods 4 do not. The reliable way is the model number: on your iPhone open Settings, tap the name of your AirPods at the top and read the model number. It is also printed in small type on the inside of the charging case lid.

The lid is the actual problem to solve

A case for a charging case sounds simple until you look at the lid. It swings back about ninety degrees every time you open it, and it sits on a small hinge that tolerates no extra load. A case built in one piece across the top and bottom would pull with every opening. After a few months the lid stops closing properly.

The OTLEY solves this with two separate parts: the lower part wraps the case, the lid gets a cover of its own. That attachment is designed to hold and still be removable. The opening mechanism stays free, the hinge stays unloaded.

This is the point where cheap and properly built AirPods cases differ, and you never see it in a product photo. You notice it after the hundredth opening.

Black is available for the AirPods Pro 3. Of the three leather colours it changes the least visibly.

The folded-edge technique: the leather is folded over the edge instead of being cut off.

Charging without taking the case off

A case you have to remove for charging stops being used after two weeks. So with the OTLEY the USB-C port stays accessible, and wireless charging works with the case on: you put the charging case down on the mat, leather and all, and that is it.

That is not a given. Inductive charging reacts sensitively to distance and to metal inserts. Leather is uncritical here, because it contains no metal and adds very little thickness. Anyone who has owned a case with a magnetic plate inside knows the other outcome.

Why a charging case needs a case at all

The AirPods charging case is smooth, pale and made of plastic. It has three properties that together create a problem in daily use: it slips, it scratches, and in a bag it looks like every other small white thing.

The scratches almost never come from dropping it. They come from travelling along. A charging case that lies next to a bunch of keys every day has fine crosshatch marks on the lid within a few months. They are shallow, they affect no function, and they never go away. Anyone who later passes the device on or sells it finds out at that moment what a leather case was worth.

The second point is grip. A smooth case slips out of your hand, especially when you flip it open one-handed. Leather holds. You notice it when pulling it out of a trouser pocket, where the bare case likes to catch on the seam and then jump away.

The third point sounds trivial and turns out to be the most useful: you find the case in your backpack without looking. A piece of leather feels unmistakable between cables, paper and plastic. The bare case feels like the power adapter.

Folded edge: why the edge decides how long it lasts

On a piece this small the edge is almost half the surface. If leather is simply cut, the cut face lies open. That is exactly where every leather item starts to come apart: the edge frays, it takes up moisture, it darkens with dirt.

In the folded-edge technique the leather is skived thin at the borders and then folded over the edge to the inside. What you see from the outside is a folded edge, not a cut one. It costs an extra step and demands very even material thickness, but it lasts considerably longer. We use the same technique on our cardholders, where the edges take the same kind of wear.

The leather: vegetable tanned cowhide from Tuscany

We work with full-grain genuine leather from a long-established family tannery in Tuscany, vegetable tanned rather than chrome tanned. It is the same leather that goes into our iPhone cases and our leather sleeves for iPad and MacBook. The hides arrive from the tannery at just under 2 mm and are brought to the thickness each piece needs.

Vegetable tanned means the hide is treated for weeks in pits with bark and plant extracts, instead of for hours with chrome salts. The result smells different, feels firmer and changes visibly under light and the touch of a hand. That change is precisely the reason to buy a leather like this.

Full grain means the surface is not sanded down for evenness. Pores, fine veins and small scars stay visible. An AirPods case in leather that sits in a pocket every day looks different after two years than it did on day one: darker, softer, with patina where it is handled most. If you want a material that always looks the same, a coated leather or Alcantara® will serve you better. We deliberately do the other thing.

Light brown changes most visibly, because pale natural leather darkens the most. Dark brown takes the middle road. Black stays closest to how it started and shows marks the least.

Alcantara® for the AirPods 4

Alcantara® is an Italian microfibre material made of 68 % polyester and 32 % polyurethane, familiar from vehicle and furniture manufacturing. It is light, hard-wearing and feels velvety like suede, but is easier to clean.

For the AirPods 4 it is our material of choice. If you want an even, matte surface that still looks the same in two years, it serves you better than a natural leather that changes on purpose. It is the quieter decision, not the lesser one.

In short

Leather if you want an object to become more personal over time. Alcantara® if you want it to stay as it is.

What the OTLEY cannot do

Three things worth knowing before you buy, because none of them can be changed:

  • It is not drop protection. Leather cushions, but it is not armour. If you drop your charging case onto hard floors regularly, a thick plastic shell serves you better. Against scuffing, scratching and rubbing, leather is the better material; against impact it is not.
  • It is not waterproof. A rain shower in a jacket pocket is no problem, a wash cycle is. Vegetable tanned leather takes up water and then needs time to dry.
  • It does not cover every generation. There are fits for the AirPods Pro 3, Pro 2 and AirPods 4. Older charging cases have different dimensions, and we have nothing in the range for them at the moment.

We would rather write that down than leave it in the small print. A case bought for the wrong purpose comes back, and that helps nobody.

€59 for an AirPods case: what is in it

A silicone case for the same charging case costs a tenth of that. The comparison is still lopsided, because the two things have different lifespans and do different jobs.

Three items sit in the price of the OTLEY that you cannot see in the product: leather from a vegetable tannage that runs for weeks instead of hours; the folded edge, which takes an extra step and practised hands; and the two-part construction that leaves the lid free instead of enclosing it. Plus the lidded gift box it arrives in.

Whether that is worth the difference comes down to a single question: whether it bothers you how your charging case will look in two years. If not, take silicone. If yes, leather is the only class of material that gets better over that time rather than worse.

Ready to give as it arrives

The OTLEY comes in a fine lidded box with a silver ribbon set diagonally across it. We emboss the silver mark ourselves, with heat and pressure. There is nothing left to wrap.

As a gift, an AirPods case has a practical advantage over a phone case: you do not need to know which iPhone the other person has, only which AirPods. And people who own AirPods almost always have them with them.

The first few weeks with the leather

New vegetable tanned leather is firmer and paler at the start than it will stay. The charging case goes in a little more tightly during the first days, because the material has not settled yet. That is intended: a case that sits loosely on day one sits too loosely six months later.

After about two weeks of daily use the leather has taken the shape. After two to three months you see the first differences in colour, usually where thumb and index finger land when opening it. After a year the even new tone has turned into a surface with lighter and darker zones.

If you do not want that, choose black, or go straight to Alcantara®. If you do want it, after a year you have a case that differs from every other one, without anything having been engraved into it.

Caring for an AirPods case in leather

Care

Wipe leather with a dry, soft cloth. Dab leather that has got wet, do not rub, and let it dry in the air. Not on a radiator. Clean Alcantara® carefully with a soft brush.

  • Day to day: a dry, soft cloth is enough. It rarely needs more.
  • Leather care: when needed, apply a colourless product sparingly. Vegetable tanned leather takes care products up greedily and darkens as it does.
  • After rain: dab it and leave it until it is dry by itself. Heat makes leather hard.
  • Alcantara®: soft brush, and dab small marks with a slightly damp cloth without rubbing hard.
  • Trouser pocket: keys and coins are no danger to the leather, but they leave marks. That is the point.

What usually travels with it

AirPods rarely travel alone. People looking for a case for them are usually also looking for the right pocket for cables and a power adapter, or the holder for their cards. Same materials, same edge:

For our larger sleeves we also work with merino wool felt, 3 mm thick, from 100 per cent virgin wool. For a charging case this small, felt is too soft, which is why the OTLEY comes in leather and Alcantara® only.

Since 2011

A material we have known since 2011

Pack & Smooch has been making accessories from vegetable tanned leather and merino wool felt since 2011. We buy whole hides rather than pre-cut pieces, which is why we know how a leather ages before we use it.

On the OTLEY the edge decides how long it lasts. That is why the leather is skived at the borders and folded over instead of simply being cut – an extra step you only come to appreciate after two years.
