No. Our CHESTER hardcase is not produced in this size. For the mini we make sleeves: KINGSTON in leather, KIRKBY in wool felt with a leather front, and SHETLAND in pure Merino wool felt.
With KINGSTON and KIRKBY, yes, both have sound holes at the lower edge. The SHETLAND in pure wool felt deliberately has no openings.
Only while you carry it. In use the phone is out of the sleeve and stays exactly as small as it is. That is the essential difference from a hardcase, which adds bulk permanently.
It is firm, and that is intended. On a small device play counts for more. After the first few weeks the felt settles against the edges and the sleeve runs more easily.
In our own workshop in Hamburg, Germany. Splitting, skiving, cutting, sewing, embossing and final inspection all happen here, and have done since 2011. The leather comes vegetable-tanned from Tuscany, and the Merino wool felt is mulesing-free.
It describes what the hide is preserved with: plant tannins from bark and wood rather than chromium salts. That takes weeks instead of hours and produces an uncoated leather that breathes and darkens over time. Our leather comes from Tuscany, where the process has been practised for centuries.
Not when dry. Vegetable-tanned leather can give off a trace when it is wet and then rubs against pale fabric. If the sleeve has been out in the rain, do not leave it to dry on a light-coloured cushion. This eases off after the first few weeks.
Both have a Merino wool felt body and a pocket at the front. The KIRKBY additionally carries a layer of Italian leather on the front and has sound holes and a charging cable cutout. The SHETLAND is pure felt, without leather and without openings, and is lighter and cheaper for it.
When dry, Merino wool felt smells neutral. When it gets wet it briefly takes on the typical wool smell, which disappears again as it dries. It is not scratchy, Merino fibres are fine, which is why they sit directly against the display.
Because the material is only part of the price. Cutting, skiving, sewing, embossing and final inspection take just as long in the mini size as in the large one, and on small parts sometimes longer, because there is less surface to guide. The only saving is on the leather itself, and that is the smaller item.
Sometimes yes. What matters is not the manufacturer but the size. Small Android devices have become rare, and many are built thicker than an iPhone 12 mini. Since we keep no measurement table for other brands, the safe route is a short message with the model name. We will tell you whether it fits.
The leather will be distinctly darker than on day one, glossy along the edges and a little softer where your thumb grips it. The wool felt will look almost unchanged, at most slightly roughened at the thumb notch. If you want a surface that stays exactly as it was when unpacked, natural materials are the wrong choice.
The variant “iPhone 13 Mini / 12 Mini”. It is named the same way on KINGSTON, KIRKBY and SHETLAND. Do not take the standard size, that is for the regular-sized devices and is far too roomy.
Yes, on the KINGSTON and in both colours. It is meant for an iPhone 12 mini that is already in a smooth, thin case. The slim fit is for the bare device.
Because we cut it ourselves. A size made in our own workshop cannot be discontinued by a supplier. Apple no longer builds new mini models, but the devices are still in use.
Yes. KINGSTON and KIRKBY have a charging cable cutout at the lower edge. With the SHETLAND you take the iPhone 12 mini out to charge it.
No. Merino wool felt is far softer than glass. The only thing that matters is that no grain of sand is sitting inside, so shake the sleeve out now and then.
KIRKBY and KINGSTON come in a fine rigid box with a lift-off lid and a silver ribbon across it. We emboss the silver logo onto the lid ourselves, with heat and pressure.
Because more raw material and more work go into leather. We buy whole hides, split them to the thickness we need and skive the edges so the seam stays flat. Not every part of a hide is usable, scars and thin areas end up as waste. Wool felt arrives as an even roll and can be cut with almost no loss.
No. KINGSTON, KIRKBY and SHETLAND get by without magnets and without metal parts that could touch the iPhone 12 mini. A sleeve needs no closure, because the fit holds it. So nothing magnetic sits against a card in the front pocket either.
No, and we do not claim it is. Leather and wool felt take a rain shower and dry again, but they are not a barrier. If you regularly take your iPhone 12 mini into wet places, you need a different tool for that.
A folio case stays on the device and folds a cover over the screen. It adds bulk permanently, and on a mini that is especially noticeable. A sleeve stays in your bag while you use the phone, the device sits bare in your hand, and there is no hinge that can wear out.
Yes. The front pocket is scaled with the rest, so a card in standard credit-card format or a folded banknote fits. Do not force in more than one card, otherwise the sleeve loses its flat line and the device no longer sits cleanly.
The honest answer: it depends on how you use it. What ages first is not the seam but the surface, on leather as patina, on wool felt as a slight roughening at the thumb notch. Neither is a defect, both are use. Because we make to size classes rather than model names, a sleeve usually outlives the device it was bought for.
Because we work with two natural materials that will not take just any colour. Vegetable-tanned leather can be dyed in dark and light browns without coating the surface. We carry the wool felt in anthracite, red and white. Bright colours would either require a coating or fade after a short time.

iPhone 12 mini case: hardcase or sleeve?
Anyone using an iPhone 12 mini chose a small phone on purpose and usually wants to keep it exactly that way. So the question about a case is different here than with the large models: anything that adds bulk takes away the very quality you bought the device for.
A hardcase clamps around the device and makes it permanently thicker. A sleeve holds the iPhone 12 mini only while you carry it, and in your hand it stays as small as it is. For this size we make sleeves. Our CHESTER hardcase is not produced for the mini. The table shows both principles side by side.

The iPhone 12 mini was the first small one, and it got hardly any accessories
When the iPhone 12 mini arrived in 2020, it was the first small iPhone of the modern shape. Apple did not continue the size after the 13 mini, and the accessory trade reacted accordingly. For small devices, hardly any new moulds are made, because the volumes are missing. Anyone looking for a decent sleeve for a 12 mini today mostly finds leftover stock.
With us, the mini size is a size of its own that we keep in the range permanently. In the size selector it is called “iPhone 13 Mini / 12 Mini”, because both devices have the same footprint. We keep it because we cut the material ourselves and therefore decide ourselves which sizes stay.
On a small device there is a second point. A 12 mini weighs around 135 grams and disappears into any trouser pocket, usually together with keys and coins. It is therefore the device that rubs against something hard most often, and at the same time the one that loses the most from a thick hardcase, because the small size was the reason to buy it.
Leather sleeve for the iPhone 12 mini: KINGSTON
The KINGSTON is the sleeve made of full leather. Vegetable-tanned cowhide leather from Tuscany on the outside, just under 2 mm thick, and 3 mm Merino wool felt inside. In the mini size that makes for a very compact object that fits into almost any trouser pocket, including the front one.
It comes in dark brown and light brown. The contrast stitching is the only decorative element, the sound holes and the charging cable cutout sit at the bottom, the thumb notch at the top. And it is the only model in our range made in two widths, in the mini size as well: slim for the bare iPhone 12 mini, wide for one that is already in a thin case.
KIRKBY: wool felt, leather and a pocket for a card
The KIRKBY has a Merino wool felt body and an Italian leather front with a flat pocket for a card, a folded banknote or a ticket. It comes in dark grey-dark brown and light grey-light brown, with sound holes, a charging cable cutout and a thumb notch.
With the mini this arithmetic works out particularly well. A small phone with a card on the outside replaces the whole wallet for short trips, and the entire package stays smaller than a large iPhone on its own.
SHETLAND: pure Merino wool felt
The SHETLAND is made entirely of Merino wool felt, 100 percent virgin wool, in anthracite, red or white. A pocket at the front, a thumb notch at the top, nothing else. No sound holes, no charging cable cutout, no leather.
In the mini size it is the lightest sleeve we make, and the cheapest. If you carry your iPhone 12 mini in a jacket pocket and take it out for every call anyway, you do not need more. The felt cushions, and it is soft enough not to abrade the display as the phone slides in.

Which size to select for the iPhone 12 mini
For the iPhone 12 mini, all three models have their own smaller size. In the size selector it is called “iPhone 13 Mini / 12 Mini”, because the iPhone 13 mini has exactly the same footprint and the same sleeve fits.

Do not take any of the large variants. In the standard size an iPhone 12 mini would have so much play that it can slide out when you bend down, and in the Pro Max size even more so. If your device is not a mini, the right page is the iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 Pro or the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Sound holes, charging cable cutout, thumb notch
Three cutouts that make the difference on a small device too. KIRKBY and KINGSTON have all three, the SHETLAND only the thumb notch.
- Sound holes. The speaker stays open, so you hear the ringtone while the iPhone 12 mini is in the sleeve.
- Charging cable cutout. Plug the cable in without taking the device out. With the mini and its smaller battery, this is the most used cutout of all.
- Thumb notch at the top. A cutout where your thumb finds grip. On a small device it matters even more, because less of the phone protrudes to hold on to.
The wide fit: iPhone 12 mini with a case inside the sleeve
The KINGSTON in the wide fit exists for the mini size too, in both colours. That is unusual, which is why we say it plainly here: many iPhone 12 mini have been in a thin clear case or silicone case for years, one nobody wants to remove because everything underneath is still intact.
The wide fit takes exactly such a device. The case stays on the phone and catches what happens while you use it. The sleeve goes over it while you carry the phone and catches what happens in your bag.
Slim is for the bare iPhone 12 mini, wide for one in a smooth, thin case. Chunky outdoor cases with rubber edges do not fit even the wide variant, they catch on the felt.
Leather or wool felt, how to decide
The question is not which is better, but what the sleeve should be in a few years.
Leather ages visibly. It darkens, picks up a sheen along the edges and keeps the traces of use. Mechanically it takes more than felt. For a device you intend to keep, and that is nearly always true of mini owners, that is a strong argument.
Merino wool felt hardly changes in appearance, is lighter, softer and cheaper. With the mini the weight counts double, because the whole package is meant to stay small and light. In anthracite the felt picks up pale lint, which a clothes brush solves in seconds.
Why a small phone needs a sleeve in particular
An iPhone 12 mini goes into a trouser pocket more often than a large device, simply because it fits. But that is also where the keys and the coins are. The typical scratches on a mini do not come from drops, they come from that shared pocket.
A second point: small devices slip out of the hand more easily, because there is less surface to grip. A sleeve changes nothing about that while you use the phone, since the phone is out, but it does keep the edges that help you grip it intact rather than letting them go dull over time.
Why a sleeve has to sit tightly
On a small device every millimetre of play counts for more. So we cut the mini size just as tightly as the large ones, rather than “a bit roomier to be safe”. A new KINGSTON or KIRKBY feels firm for the first few days, and that is the state we want.
After the first weeks the felt settles against the edges and the sleeve runs noticeably more easily. From then on it stays that way. That tolerance comes from the cut and cannot be bought in.
Care and packaging
Leather needs as little as possible. Remove dust with a dry, soft cloth. If it gets wet, dab it, do not rub, and let it dry at room temperature, not on a radiator. Vegetable-tanned leather is uncoated, it takes on what happens and turns it into patina.
Shake out the wool felt and brush it with a soft clothes brush. Dab out stains with clear water, without rubbing, and never put it in the washing machine.
