With KINGSTON and KIRKBY, yes. Both have sound holes at the lower edge, so the speaker stays open. The SHETLAND in pure wool felt deliberately has no openings, so the sound is muffled there.
No. Merino wool felt is far softer than glass and cannot abrade it. The only thing that matters is that no grain of sand is sitting inside the sleeve, so shake it out now and then.
Often yes. Within one size class the measurements hardly change, and a sleeve is more forgiving than a hardcase. KIRKBY and KINGSTON cover the standard class from the iPhone 17 back to the 12. If you are unsure, send us your model.
KIRKBY and KINGSTON come in a fine rigid box with a lift-off lid and a silver ribbon across it. We emboss the silver logo onto the lid ourselves, with heat and pressure.
In our own workshop in Hamburg, Germany. Splitting, skiving, cutting, sewing, embossing and final inspection all happen here, and have done since 2011. The leather comes vegetable-tanned from Tuscany, and the Merino wool felt is mulesing-free.
It describes what the hide is preserved with: plant tannins from bark and wood rather than chromium salts. That takes weeks instead of hours and produces an uncoated leather that breathes and darkens over time. Our leather comes from Tuscany, where the process has been practised for centuries.
Not when dry. Vegetable-tanned leather can give off a trace when it is wet and then rubs against pale fabric. If the sleeve has been out in the rain, do not leave it to dry on a light-coloured cushion. This eases off after the first few weeks.
One question decides it: is your iPhone 16e currently in a case you want to keep? If not, take slim. If yes, and it is a smooth, thin case in plastic or thin leather, take wide. With a chunky case with rubberised edges neither width fits, so take the case off while you carry it.
A folio case stays on the device and folds a cover over the screen. It adds bulk permanently, and its hinge is the part that wears out first. A sleeve stays in your bag while you use the phone, the iPhone 16e sits bare in your hand, and there is no moving part that can wear out.

No. Our CHESTER hardcase is not produced in this size, which is why it does not appear on this page. For the iPhone 16e we make sleeves: KINGSTON in leather, KIRKBY in wool felt with a leather front, and SHETLAND in pure Merino wool felt.
Yes, that is what the KINGSTON in the wide fit is for. It is cut so that an iPhone 16e in a smooth clear case or a thin leather case fits inside. The slim fit is for the bare device. Chunky outdoor cases with rubber edges do not fit.
Yes. KINGSTON and KIRKBY have a charging cable cutout at the lower edge. With the SHETLAND you take the iPhone 16e out to charge it.
It is firm at first, and that is intended. A sleeve has to sit tightly without jamming, otherwise the device slides out when you bend down. After the first few weeks the material gives a little and the sleeve runs more easily.
Leather. It takes more mechanical wear and ages visibly more slowly. Merino wool felt is lighter and softer in return, and it absorbs impacts. Both age, only differently: leather develops a patina, felt hardly changes in appearance.
As little as possible. Remove dust with a dry, soft cloth. If it gets wet, dab it, do not rub, and let it dry at room temperature, not on a radiator. Shake out the wool felt and brush it off, do not wash it.
Because more raw material and more work go into leather. We buy whole hides, split them to the thickness we need and skive the edges so the seam stays flat. Not every part of a hide is usable either, scars and thin areas end up as waste. Wool felt arrives as an even roll and can be cut with almost no loss.
No. KINGSTON, KIRKBY and SHETLAND get by without magnets and without metal parts that could touch the iPhone 16e. A sleeve needs no closure, because the fit holds it. That also means nothing magnetic sits against a card you carry in the front pocket.
No, and we do not claim it is. Leather and wool felt take a rain shower and dry again, but they are not a barrier. If you regularly take your iPhone 16e into wet places, a sleeve in natural materials is not the right tool for it.
Both have a Merino wool felt body and a pocket at the front. The KIRKBY additionally carries a layer of Italian leather on the front and has sound holes and a charging cable cutout. The SHETLAND is pure felt, without leather and without openings, and is lighter and cheaper for it.
When dry, Merino wool felt smells neutral. When it gets wet it briefly takes on the typical wool smell, which disappears again as it dries. It is not scratchy, Merino fibres are fine, which is why we use them as the inner layer right against the display.
iPhone 16e case: hardcase or sleeve?
There are two ways to protect an iPhone 16e, and they rule each other out. A hardcase stays on the device permanently and becomes part of it. A sleeve holds the phone while you carry it, and you take the phone out to use it. Both make sense, only for different people.
For the iPhone 16e we make sleeves. Our CHESTER hardcase is not produced in this size, which is why it is not on this page. We would rather leave a product out than claim a fit that does not exist. The table below still shows both principles side by side, so you can see what you are choosing.

How it fits: leather and wool felt on video

Leather sleeve for the iPhone 16e: KINGSTON
The KINGSTON is our sleeve made of full leather. Vegetable-tanned cowhide leather from Tuscany on the outside, just under 2 mm thick, and 3 mm Merino wool felt inside. The iPhone 16e sits between those two layers. The leather takes the wear on the outside, the felt on the inside touches the display, and because felt is softer than glass it leaves no grinding marks even after years.
The contrast stitching is the only decorative element. No logo on the front, no contrast colour, no zip. The KINGSTON comes in dark brown and light brown, and it is the only model in our range that is made in two widths: slim for the bare device, and wide for an iPhone 16e that is already in a thin case. There is more on which width is right for you further down.
The sound holes and the charging cable cutout sit at the lower edge. At the top the edge is cut away so your thumb has something to grip. Those three cutouts are the difference between a sleeve you use every day and one that ends up in a drawer after two weeks.
KIRKBY: wool felt, leather and a pocket for your card
The KIRKBY is the combination. The body is Merino wool felt, the front carries a layer of Italian leather, and that leather front holds a flat pocket. It takes one card, a folded banknote or a train ticket. Not more, and that is intended: as soon as you force three cards in, the sleeve loses its slim line and the iPhone 16e no longer sits cleanly.
It comes in dark grey-dark brown and light grey-light brown. Like the KINGSTON it has sound holes, a charging cable cutout and the thumb notch at the top. For many people the KIRKBY is the compromise they were actually looking for: the warmth of felt against the device, the toughness of leather facing outwards, and a pocket that saves the trip back to the wallet.
SHETLAND: the plainest sleeve for the iPhone 16e
The SHETLAND is made entirely of Merino wool felt, 100 percent virgin wool, in anthracite, red or white. A pocket at the front for a card or a banknote, a thumb notch at the top, nothing else. No sound holes, no charging cable cutout, no leather. If you take your iPhone 16e out the moment it rings, you will not miss the openings, and in return you get the lightest and softest sleeve we make.
Felt has one property that people underestimate: it cushions. If an iPhone 16e in a felt sleeve drops from hip height onto a wooden floor, the felt absorbs part of the energy before it reaches the device. It will not save you from a fall onto concrete, but against what actually happens in daily life it helps a great deal.

Which size to select for the iPhone 16e
Our sleeves are not sorted by individual device names but by size classes. That sounds imprecise at first, but it is the reason a sleeve from us stays usable longer than the device you bought it for. The iPhone 16e sits in the standard class, together with the non-enlarged models of recent years.

Sound holes, charging cable cutout, thumb notch
Three details you only notice in daily use, and then do not want to be without. KIRKBY and KINGSTON have all three, the SHETLAND deliberately has only the thumb notch.
- Sound holes. The speaker stays open. You hear the ringtone while the iPhone 16e is in the sleeve. Without those openings every call turns into a muffled buzz in your bag.
- Charging cable cutout. You plug the cable in without taking the device out. Overnight on the bedside table the iPhone 16e stays protected and still charges.
- Thumb notch at the top. A cutout at the upper edge where your thumb finds grip. Without it you are pulling at a smooth edge, and that is exactly where cheap sleeves tear after a few months.
The wide fit: iPhone 16e with a case inside the sleeve
There is a third way, and hardly anyone else offers it. A great many people already carry their iPhone 16e in a clear case or a thin silicone case, but they still do not want to drop it unprotected into a backpack, a handbag or a toolbox. The KINGSTON in the wide fit exists for exactly that situation.
The result is protection on two levels. The case stays on the device and catches what happens while you use it: the edge of a table leg, the grab that misses. The sleeve goes over it while you carry the phone and catches what happens in your bag: keys, coins, the zip of the inner pocket.
Slim is for a bare iPhone 16e. Wide is for one that is already in a smooth, thin case. The wide fit is not suitable for chunky outdoor cases with rubber edges, because those catch on the felt. When in doubt: smooth and thin fits, grippy and bulky does not.
Leather or wool felt, how to decide
The question cannot be answered with better or worse, only with a counter-question: what should the sleeve be in five years?
Leather ages visibly. It darkens, picks up a sheen along the edges and takes on the traces of what you did with it. If you like that, you get an object that looks better over time than it did on day one. If you like flawless surfaces, it will not make you happy. Mechanically, leather takes more than felt, it wears through more slowly and forgives a key that once ran across it.
Merino wool felt hardly changes in appearance. It is lighter, softer, warmer in the hand and considerably cheaper. In return it is more sensitive to sharp objects, and in anthracite it happily picks up pale lint. A clothes brush solves that in ten seconds.
In practice most people decide like this: if you carry the phone in a bag with other hard things, take leather. If you slip it on its own into a jacket pocket, take felt.
Why a sleeve has to sit tightly
A sleeve that sits loosely is not a sleeve, it is a pouch. The device slides out when you bend down, and that is exactly when it falls. So we cut tightly, and that is why a new KINGSTON or KIRKBY feels firm for the first few days. That is not a bad fit, it is the state we want.
After the first few weeks the material gives a little, the felt settles against the edges of the iPhone 16e and the sleeve runs more easily. From then on it stays that way. You cannot buy that tolerance, it comes from the cut, and it is the reason we can offer the KINGSTON in two widths at all.
When you change device
Hardcases are tied to one model. Change phones and the case is waste. A sleeve is not. In the standard class, KIRKBY and KINGSTON cover the range from the iPhone 17 back to the 12, and the iPhone 16e sits right in the middle of it. If you move to a newer model of the same class in two years, you keep using the sleeve.
The effect works backwards too. If you keep an older iPhone, at some point you will no longer find a matching hardcase in the shops, because manufacturers retire the moulds. A sleeve keeps working as long as the size class stays the same.
Care and packaging
Leather needs as little care as possible. Remove dust with a dry, soft cloth. If it gets wet, dab it, do not rub, and let it dry at room temperature, not on a radiator. Grease and moisture soak into vegetable-tanned leather and become part of the patina. That cannot be undone, and it is not meant to be.
Shake out the wool felt and brush it with a soft clothes brush. Dab out stains with clear water, without rubbing. Never put it in the washing machine, felt keeps felting there and shrinks.
